[800] Miles to the pole

Part of the Ice Warrior’s world first
Arctic Expedition to the Pole of Inaccessibility

michael palin: "I greatly admire all of you for having a go" <here>

In February 2015, the Ice Warrior Project is undertaking one of the most significant and ambitious polar expeditions of our time; to be the first expedition in history to reach the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, carrying out crucial scientific research along our journey.

The Ice Warrior Project is unique. Founded by Jim McNeill, an accomplished polar veteran with over 30 years's extreme expeditioning, the remaining team-members are ordinary people from all walks of life, with little or no experience of polar explorations, pushing themselves to their limits for the benefit of modern-day exploration and scientific advancement.

To the very centre of the Arctic Ocean - for the first time in history

THE NORTHERN POLE OF INACCESSIBILITY IS DEFINED AS THE MOST DISTANT POINT FROM LAND; THE VERY CENTRE OF THE ARCTIC OCEAN.

Our transect is an 800 mile journey from the northern shores of Canada. As Scientific American put it: "Of all the places on the surface of the Earth, few are harder to reach than the appropriately named north pole of inaccessibility." It remains the last truly significant place in the Polar Regions yet to be reached by mankind.

The journey will take our team more than 80 days, across treacherously unstable sea-ice, in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth. We will face relentless cold temperatures of -50°C that will freeze flesh in seconds. There will be the ever-present threat of polar bear attack.

Ordinary people, doing truly extraordinary things

our quest for the northern pole of inaccessibility is led by jim mcneill, British polar explorer and personality, with over 30 years of extreme expedition experience. but We are not seasoned explorers.

The Ice Warrior Project is about training ordinary people from all walks of life, all echelons of society and all nations to become competent, safe modern-day explorers, undertaking ground-breaking, purposeful and worthwhile expeditions.

Our journey will be split into 4 legs, each 20 days in duration and hopefully 200 miles in length. 6 team members will accompany Jim on each leg, skiing for up to 16 hours per day and hauling more than our bodyweight behind us.

We still don't know enough about global change - our expedition will help this

The data we gather will be used in partnership with leading institutes including: the NASA-funded National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), The Met Office, Royal Geographical Society, The Scott Polar Research Institute, The Norwegian Polar Institute and the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.

The state of the Arctic Ocean is one of the most important stories of global Concern. The Polar Regions are vital 'early warning indicators' of climate change.

The Arctic, for example, is warming at a rate of almost twice the global average. Yet, ironically, we have only a limited understanding of the change. Despite satellites and modern technology, the data required to probe this can only be gathered reliably on the ground. And without this data, it is near-impossible to assess the impact of our mitigating actions.

Our expedition is a major ‘citizen science’ project. By going to the very centre of the Arctic Ocean, we will build a full transect dataset for the first time. Our mission is to gather frequent, crucial field data on ice composition, thickness and break-up, to allow leading scientists to better understand the state of the Arctic sea.

The Ice Warrior expedition, led by Jim McNeill, is a cause and ambition supported by many

THE HON. ALEXANDRA SHACKLETON (expedition patron):

"MY GRANDFATHER, ERNEST SHACKLETON, IS ALWAYS IDENTIFIED WITH "WHITE SOUTH"; YET IN 1920 HE WAS PLANNING AN EXPEDITION TO A WHITE NORTH.HE INTENDED TO SEEK OUT THE POLE OF INACCESSIBILITY"

“The terrain is exceptionally hostile and dangerous; but I am confident that Jim and his team will be successful not only in reaching the elusive pole; but in conducting an environmentally vital transect of the Arctic Ocean; for as Ernest Shackleton said "difficulties are just things to overcome.”"
Ranulph Fiennes.jpg

SIR RANULPH FIENNES (ice warrior patron):

"ICE WARRIOR HAS ALL THE POTENTIAL OF A TRULY GREAT BRITISH FIRST."

"I have come to learn of the determination, dexterity, skills and knowledge of Jim and the crew behind the project and am delighted to be associated with them... Slightly mad and eccentric in conception, thorough and precise in planning and likely to prove ingenious and resolved in execution."
boris-johnson-445781.jpg

Boris Johnson:

"This is a groundbreaking expedition with people from all walks of life"

"There are very few places on Earth that are truly unexplored: Jim McNeill and his Ice Warrior team are hoping to reduce that by one by walking to the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility... I am delighted that London is leading the way on this scientific and environmental odyssey."
Michael Palin.jpg

Michael Palin:

"I greatly admire all of you for having a go"

"Learning to travel the hard way is not only the best way, but it’s also the most memorable... Believe me you won’t forget the experience. Good luck.”
Robert-Winston-014.jpg

LORD ROBERT WINSTON:

“WHAT JIM AND HIS TEAM ARE DOING IS PIONEERING OF THE MOST ADVANCED KIND."

"Just as Cancer Research UK is genuinely pioneering new ways to treat cancer; what he is planning pushes man beyond the boundaries and will take him to the most inaccessible places on Earth.”
Zac Goldsmith.jpg

ZAC GOLDSMITH MP:

"THEY ARE DOING IT WITH GENUINE PURPOSE"

"The data they’ll gather will deliver new evidence as to what is really happening and further our understanding of the sea-ice and its effect on climate change."
Keith Taylor.jpg

Keith Taylor MEP:

"[the] ice warrior project can play an important role in progressing action on climate change"

"I’m delighted to hear about this project, which not only enables people from across society to take part in modern-day exploration, but is also contributing to valuable research about changes to our polar regions."
